In Bruges, In August

Colin Farrell gives his best – and funniest – performance in ages (as does Ralph Fiennes – he’s hilarious. Fancy that) in Martin McDonagh’s In Bruges, which arrives on DVD in the UK on 11 August.

Irish stalwart Brendan Gleeson fills out the leads as the avuncular colleague of Farrell’s guilt-ravaged assassin. The pair are holed up in the sleepy, picturesque town of Bruges (as the poster informs, it’s in Belgium) to lay low after a bungled hit. But little do they know that humourless, psychotic cockney boss Harry (Fiennes aiming to out-do Bing Kingsley’s Sexy Beast pitbull) has other plans than sightseeing for them.

In Bruges is a sweary, action-laced comedy with a twisted, black heart and a killer script from lauded Anglo-Irish playwright McDonagh. It’ll be rated 18 with an RRP of £19.99 and laden with the following extras:

Deleted and extended scenes

Gag reel

‘When In Bruges

‘A Boat Trip Around Bruges

‘F**king Bruges

Look out for a review in issue 119 of DVD & Blu-ray Review, on sale 24 July.

The Wire Season 5 Exclusive!

The first episode of the last season of the greatest TV show you’ve never seen was previewed last night and fortunately we were there to see it. It’s more vice, violence and double-dealing from the streets and the halls of power in Baltimore, with the latest clutch of episodes taking a sharp look at the state of the media.
“It made sense to finish The Wire with this reflection on the state of the media, as all the other attendant problems of the American city depicted in the previous four seasons will not be solved until the depth and range of those problems is first acknowledged. And that won’t happen without an intelligent, aggressive and well-funded press.” Said creator David Simon, who was on hand for a Q+A session with the UK’s biggest fan of The Wire and TV loudmouth Charlie Brooker. We also got a look at Simon's new seven part miniseries for HBO. Not one to shy away from the hot political issues of the day, this time he has taken on the Iraq war in Generation Kill, specifically the first 40 days of the conflict from the point of view of Marines from First Recon Battalion. There’s no UK date for it, but it premieres in the states on July 13.

Expect more of The Wire and the very best of the box on disc in a forthcoming TV special.

What It Says On The Tin

If movies fell under the Trade Descriptions Act – and believe us, if they did, it would make our jobs a lot easier – they might end up looking a bit like these no-nonsense posters and DVD sleeves, courtesy of Photoshop pranksters b3ta.com, which take the Ronseal approach to product description...

Of course, as a wise man once said, there really is nothing new under the sun:

More occasionally amusing idiocy here. Although be warned – some of them are pretty close to the knuckle...
