We've just heard that MPI Home Video are planning a Blu-ray release of Tobe Hooper's masterpeice The Texas Chain Saw Massacre at the end of September. This is likely to be a Region A release but a UK version is sure to follow - no word on the extras yet, but with any luck it'll have all the good stuff on the absolutely essential 2006 Dark Skies release.

This is my favoruite horror movie of all time. In fact it's one of my favourite movies of all time. So you'd think I'd be jumping up and down with sick delight. But the news fills me with trepidation. Part of the genius of this movie is how dirty and seedy it is – the feathers and the bones in the house, the sculpture in the graveyard, the drunk shouting "I've seen things!" – it's all part of the atmosphere. The grainy print adds to this, it makes you feel like you're watching something sordid, cheap, a bit rotten, someone's revolting little home video. So I'm just a little bit frightened Blu-ray's going to detract from this. Blasphemy! Blasphemy! Yeah, yeah I know. And I'll still want to buy the damn thing I'm sure. So I want to open this to the floor: can Blu-ray ever be a bad thing? Can there ever be releases that just aren't suitable for a hi-def make over? Head on over to the forum and let's have an argument about it...
