“See” says Michael Bay. “Told you I was right.”

Thanks to Michael Bay’s HD DVD rants over the past couple of months we’ve always had something tasty to put in the HD news page. First he was giving the two-fingered salute to Universal over Transformers 2, threatening to steer well clear with no Blu-ray release. No doubt the studio gave him a little nudge and he was back on board with HD DVD, but it didn’t last. Soon enough he was shooting his mouth off about Blu-ray looking like a dead cert for victory. And he didn’t miss his opportunity to gloat while presenting an award at the Visual Effects Society celebration recently. "Blu-ray’s better, and I told everyone" said Bay. Although Universal is yet to heed his advice, the Voice Of Blu-ray™ has convinced many others, with some big hitters pledging to Blu for the future.

Is Toshiba dumping HD DVD?

Blimey, we didn’t see this one coming. Having spent most days since the Vegas show looking for signs that Paramount or Universal might be making the leap to Blu-ray (or back to Blu-ray in Paramount’s case), we were rather surprised by The Hollywood Reporter’s suggestion that the founders of the format, Toshiba, may actually be doing a bunk. After retail giant Best Buy and rental service Netflix unveiled plans for a Blu-ray future for their customers, things were looking dim for the format. However, will Tosh turn the lights off completely? If it happens it’s going to happen soon. According to the blogosphere the company counts the beans for 2007 at the end of March, and chances are it will want to cut its loses well before then…
